Investigation launched after man pulled from River Lea following police pursuit
The man died at the scene
An independent investigation is underway after the death of a man in Stanstead Abbotts.
Hertfordshire Police were pursuing a man on Monday 14th September, after he was found to be wanted in connection with two robbery offences.
A spokesperson for the force says the man then entered the River Lea to flea officers, and wasn't in their sight when he entered the river.
He was pronounced dead at the scene after being located.
Officers have now informed his next of kin.
The incident was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which is standard procedure.
The spokesperson said due to the ongoing investigation, it would be 'inappropriate to comment further at this time'.
