The Independent Office for Police Conduct is continuing its investigation into the fatal police shooting that took place in Bedford on 12 May, with investigators examining extensive evidence gathered from the scene.

Officials have confirmed that the man who died was 41-year-old Angelo Russo, from Bedford, after formal identification procedures were completed.

According to information provided by his family, Russo had been experiencing mental health issues in the period leading up to the incident and had previously been known to local mental health crisis services.

A post-mortem examination carried out last week found the provisional cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the chest.

Investigators say they are currently reviewing a large volume of material, including drone footage, body-worn camera recordings and video captured from police vehicles. Officers have also contacted nearby residents who may possess footage relevant to the investigation.

Evidence reviewed so far indicates that shortly before the shooting, Russo was allegedly seen displaying what appeared to be a pistol-style weapon through the window of a property on Aylesbury Road.

The IOPC said that at the moment armed officers discharged their weapons, Russo had opened the window and pointed the object toward police. A ballistics specialist has since identified the weapon as an air pistol, although further forensic testing is still underway.

Additional statements have also been taken from officers present at the scene, all of whom are currently being treated as witnesses while inquiries continue.

IOPC Director Emily Barry said: “Our thoughts remain with Mr Russo’s family and with everyone impacted by this tragic incident.

“Given that this incident began the previous evening, there are significant amounts of evidence, including hours of footage, that our investigators are working hard to review as we piece together what occurred.

“It’s important that we now allow the investigation to run its course and our report and findings will be shared with the Coroner to assist with inquest proceedings.”

The watchdog confirmed it is working closely with the Coroner’s office, and an inquest is expected to be opened at a later date.
