A 44-year-old man has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman while she was asleep.

Che Phillip, formerly of Bedford, attacked the victim as she slept on a sofa following a party. The victim woke up, realised what was happening, and managed to push him away before leaving and contacting the police.

Phillip, now of Brunswick Place in Hove, was convicted of sexual assault and received his sentence today (18th December) at court.

The judge acknowledged the strength of forensic evidence in the case and described Phillip’s actions as predatory, highlighting the vulnerability of the victim and his lack of remorse.

Detective Constable Amy Dewar from Bedfordshire Police praised the bravery of the survivor for coming forward and expressed the force’s commitment to tackling sexual assault.

“This was a shocking and predatory act that violated the victim’s trust and safety leaving her with severe psychological harm including flashbacks of what happened,” DC Dewar said.

“We commend her courage in coming forward and reporting what happened. Sexual assault is never acceptable, and we will continue to work tirelessly to bring offenders to justice and support victims.

“It is never too late to report a crime, and by doing so, you are helping us to bring these dangerous perpetrators to justice.”

Victims of sexual assault are encouraged to report incidents to the police, where they will receive support and their case will be thoroughly investigated.
