A 42-year-old woman from Houghton Regis has been sentenced to four years in prison after scamming a group of friends out of £151,000.

Jemma Davidson of Morpeth Crescent, Houghton Regis, began borrowing money from a friend in December 2023, spinning elaborate tales of an impending insurance payout to persuade them to continue lending her money.

As the debt grew, Davidson made up fake emails and letters outlining her supposed struggle to secure the funds.

Eventually, the victim called upon two friends for help, leading to financial hardship for all involved.

The police were notified in July 2025, prompting an investigation by Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Serious Fraud and Cyber Unit.

Davidson was charged with fraud by false representation and forgery, to which she pleaded guilty at Luton Crown Court on 25th September. She was sentenced to four years in prison.

Detective Constable Laura Varney, from Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Serious Fraud and Cyber Unit, said: “Davidson lied and took advantage of her friend’s compassion, sending her into debt to fund a lifestyle she could not sustain.

“The deception carried on for years, eventually affecting two other people who also thought they were helping Davidson out. The sentence reflects the serious and lasting impact her actions had on the lives of those she lied to.”
