Residents have been evacuated from homes in Croxley Green after a large field fire spread rapidly towards nearby properties and woodland.
Fire crews were called to Little Green Lane shortly after midday on Saturday (18 July), with the blaze described as “well alight” when they arrived.
Area Commander Greg Duke from Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters faced a fast-moving fire that was heading towards homes.
He said:
“When firefighters arrived at the scene the fire was spreading rapidly and heading towards nearby homes. Our crews worked hard to protect these properties and were able to successfully contain the fire.”
Eight fire engines were sent to the scene, along with a water bowser, drone and specialist nebula misting vehicle to help tackle the flames.
Residents living on Little Green Lane were asked to leave their homes as a precaution after the fire spread into a neighbouring field and areas of woodland.
The fire is now under control, although crews remain at the scene to fully extinguish the blaze.
Three Rivers District Council is urging residents nearby to keep all windows and doors closed and to avoid the affected area completely.
The fire is now under control but work is ongoing to extinguish it completely.
The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.
