Drug use and self-harm remain prominent challenges at HMP Aylesbury according to a recent report by HM Inspectorate of Prisons.

The report, based on a visit in February, identified concerns over drug supply, self-harm, safety, and prisoner support prior to release.

A quarter of inmates tested positive for drugs over the last year and two drug-related deaths have occurred since 2022.

The inspectorate noted procedural weaknesses and inconsistent use of security equipment but acknowledged some effective support methods for those affected by drugs.

Despite the statistics, the report described HMP Aylesbury as a prison showing improvement with committed staff.

While self-harm incidents increased dramatically, inspectors commended the prison’s strong leadership, which has positively impacted violence reduction.

However, there are critiques regarding educational and support provisions essential for prisoner rehabilitation.

In response to the report, the HM Prison and Probation Service spokesperson assured that investments are being made in security and mental health support following the inspection:

“Inspectors recognised the positive impact strong leadership has had at HMP Aylesbury, particularly on reducing violence.

“But the prison is still operating under immense pressure. We have taken urgent action to strengthen security and improve mental health support following this inspection.”

HMPPS says prison has enhanced its entry controls, improved safety oversight, and adjusted its drug strategy to better coordinate efforts for stability and security.

Further investments in broader physical security measures, including drone countermeasures, aim to safeguard prison environments.

HMPPS also says it has committed millions to maintain, secure, and improve conditions across the prison service, with substantial investments set for upcoming years.

The prison plans to continue learning from this inspection to support further positive changes.
