Four new Hertfordshire councils to be established

Hertfordshire is set to undergo a major transformation in its local government structure as the Government has announced the creation of four new unitary authorities, a change scheduled to take effect on 1st April 2028.

This decision, revealed today, will see the restructuring of local governance, replacing the current county and district councils with newly formed authorities designed to streamline service delivery.

New Councils and Structure

The reorganisation will divide Hertfordshire into four distinct areas:

North West Hertfordshire will cover Dacorum and St Albans.

South West Hertfordshire includes Hertsmere, Watford, and Three Rivers.

Central Hertfordshire will cater to parts of North Herts, Stevenage, and Welwyn Hatfield.

Eastern Hertfordshire will serve Broxbourne, East Herts, plus specific wards from Welwyn Hatfield and North Herts.

According to the Government, this model aims to reflect Hertfordshire's distinct economic areas and enhance connectivity within local communities.

Steps Towards Reorganisation

In anticipation of these changes, elections to appoint councillors for the new authorities will be held in May 2027.

These officials will operate in a "shadow" capacity, setting the stage for the full establishment of the councils in 2028.
