Hertfordshire residents warned about bank card distraction thefts
There has been a spate of thefts targeting vulnerable people in car parks
Hertfordshire Police are urging residents to remain vigilant following a series of bank card thefts occurring in local car parks across Hertsmere.
These incidents involve suspects approaching older and vulnerable individuals, instructing them to use a card machine or pay and display machine before distracting them and stealing their bank cards.
Victims are tricked into verbally stating their PIN numbers, enabling the suspects to steal money.
Reported locations
Reports have identified several locations affected by these thefts, including:
• Merry Hill Road, Bushey
• Byng Drive, Potters Bar
• The Drive, Potters Bar
• Manor Road Car Park, Potters Bar
• The Walk, Potters Bar (Junction with High Street)
• Potters Bar High Street (outside Questmore Pharmacy)
• The Rutts Car Park, Bushey
• Bushey High Road Car Park
Police response
The Neighbourhood Policing Team has initiated plain clothes patrols within the area and informed local shops and businesses.
PC Luke Hinchcliffe from the Bushey and Radlett Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “We’re carrying out extensive enquiries to find those responsible and we’re urging residents to be vigilant.
“If you are approached under suspicious circumstances and believe a crime is in action, please call 999. If the suspects have left the scene please call the non-emergency number 101.
“If you have information about these incidents, please get in touch. I’d also like to ask that you please share this message with any older relatives and friends.”
Two individuals arrested in March in connection with similar offences in Bushey Heath are currently on bail.
Officers say they are working to find out if these incidents are related.
