Hertfordshire man charged with stealing 45 streetlamps and lanterns worth £1million

A 20-year-old man from Hertfordshire faces charges of stealing 45 streetlamps and ornate lanterns valued at approximately £1million.
John O’Sullivan, of High Street in Barkway near Royston, is accused of 38 counts of theft across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Durham, Thames Valley, Essex, and Hertfordshire.
An additional seven thefts allegedly took place in Hertfordshire between 17th September 2025 and 17th March 2026.
The stolen items include Grade II listed 1950s street lamps, known as Richardson Candles, taken from Cambridge City centre, impacting councils, businesses, churches, schools, and private individuals.
O’Sullivan is scheduled to appear at Stevenage Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 5th August.
Anna O'Sullivan, aged 66, and Richard O’Sullivan, aged 67, both of High Street, Barkway, have been charged with handling stolen goods.
They are due at the same court on Wednesday 12th August.
