A charity in Hemel Hempstead says the Easter school break can be difficult for families who often rely on free school meals and is urging anyone struggling to reach out for help as soon as possible.

Many schools across the County broke up for the Easter holidays on Friday, with schools reopening on Monday, 13 April 2026.

The two-week break can be a “really challenging” time for families who are already struggling, according to DENS.

Chief Executive of the charity, Wendy Lewington said: “There's the added expense if they usually get free school meals and they need additional food at home.

“Also, if you've got a couple of children and you're trying to entertain them, no matter how much you try to do it cheaply, there is an additional cost.”

DENS provides thousands of food parcels each month and last year delivered more than 120,000 meals through its foodbank.

Ms Lewington says she expects the foodbank to be even busier over the coming weeks: “Whenever we know we're going to hit a busy period, we'll make sure we've got a number of food parcels made-up.

“And it's also that time of year where everyone has colds and flus, so we make sure we have backup volunteers and staff, but it's really about us making sure we've got all the food parcels there.

She added: “Get help soon as possible. Never be embarrassed, never be concerned because we are set up to help you. That's what we want to do.

“And it's not just the immediate help - Yes, we will make sure that you and your family can eat and have cleaning products and can live - but more importantly, either we'll be able to provide you with advice or support, or we will signpost you to an organisation.

“That will mean in the future you won't need to keep using a foodbank.”
