A man who changed his appearance by cutting his hair, shaving off his facial hair and discarding a distinctive jacket after stabbing a man in Bedford has been jailed.

In the early hours of Sunday the 2nd of March, Mohammed Rekwet was involved in an altercation with a man inside a pub in Mill Street. Shortly after, CCTV captured the pair in a nearby alleyway, where Rekwet lunged at the man with a knife, causing serious injuries.

Following a public appeal, a member of the public contacted police to provide information. This lead to Rekwet's identification and his arrest at his home address.

Rekwet was interviewed and later released on bail while further enquiries were carried out.

CCTV from his home address showed him returning home shortly after the attack wearing the same clothing seen at the scene. Detectives matched the trainers seen in the footage to those he was wearing when he was brought into custody.

Rekwet, 20 of Conduit Road, Bedford, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and was sentenced at Luton Crown Court on Friday to two years and four months in jail.

Detective Constable Osborne, from Bedfordshire Police, who led the investigation, said: “This was a brutal attack in which Rekwet showed clear intent to cause serious harm, after making the deliberate decision to carry a knife on a night out."

“Despite his attempts to avoid detection, we were able to build a clear picture of his actions through CCTV and crucial information provided by the public."

“This highlight just how important the public are in supporting our investigations, helping us to bring dangerous offenders to justice and keep our communities safe.”
