The family of a cyclist who died after a collision in Hitchin have paid tribute to him, describing him as a “cherished father, partner, son, brother and friend.”

Jason O’Hanlon, 46, from Hitchin, sustained life threatening injuries when his modified electric pedal cycle was involved in a crash with a white BMW X6 on Purwell Lane at around 2pm on Monday 13th October. He was taken to hospital but died from his injuries on Friday 17th October.

In a statement, Jason’s family said, “We are heartbroken at the loss of the man so many loved. He was a cherished father, partner, son, brother and friend to so many. Losing Jason in such a sudden and devastating way has left a hole that can never be filled.”

The family also thanked emergency services and medical staff for their efforts, as well as friends and relatives for their support. They have asked for privacy as they grieve.

The collision is being investigated by Hertfordshire Constabulary. Inspector Craig Wheeler from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit offered his sympathies and appealed for witnesses or anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward.

Due to the cyclist having interaction with British Transport Police officers in a marked vehicle before the collision, BTP referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

Following review, the IOPC has confirmed Hertfordshire Constabulary will continue the investigation.
