The family and friends of a motorcyclist, who lost his life after a collision in Caddington, has paid tribute to him.

Paul Gowlett, 58, from Houghton Regis, died at the scene on Dunstable Road on Thursday 19 March.

The incident, which occurred shortly before 6.30pm, involved a black Toyota Yaris and a silver Yamaha R1M.

The driver of the Toyota, a man in his 40s, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and has been released on bail while enquiries continue.

Paying tribute to Paul, a family member said: “Paul will always be remembered for spending most of his time in the garage working on and rebuilding bikes and cars.

“Paul loved riding the open road with his friends on his motorbike. It was a tragic shock to his remaining family and will be missed by many. Rest in peace Paul.’’

Paul’s friend David, at Flitwick Motorcycles, also paid tribute to him: “Paul, or Gadget as everyone knew him, was a huge part of the local motorcycling community - everyone knew who he was. He would chat to anyone, and no-one ever had a bad word to say about him.

“He first came into our shop about 15 years ago and quickly became part of the fixtures and fittings - always laughing, joking and messing around - it was a happy occasion when Gadget came to visit! He was a part of our 'Flitwick Family' and above all, we counted him as a true friend.

“He loved his toys, didn't take life too seriously and despite his quirky and distinct appearance and personality, was always there ready to help his friends if help was needed. He was truly one of life's great characters and a reminder not to judge a book by its cover!

“Myself, Carole, Steve and everyone at Flitwick Motorcycles past and present were shocked and saddened to hear of his passing in such tragic circumstances aboard his beloved Yamaha R1-M that we were so proud to look after for him. The community feels smaller and the world a little sadder without Gadget in it and we will miss him greatly. I hope that this message, which has been echoed in contact I have received from so many of his friends brings some comfort to his brother at this difficult time, in the knowledge that he was so liked by so many.”

Detective Constable Felicity Walker, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our thoughts are with Paul’s family and friends at this very sad time.

“We are still appealing for information to help us establish the circumstances around the collision and would urge anyone that may have seen either the Toyota or the motorcycle prior to the collision, to get in touch.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage is asked to report online here or call 101 quoting Operation Mornington.
