The family of Muriel McKay, who was murdered almost 60 years ago, say they're still hopeful about finding her remains and one day, getting closure.

Muriel was kidnapped and held at a farm in Hertfordshire for ransom after the abductors mistook her for Anna Murdoch, who was then Rupert Murdoch's wife.

On Friday (20th March), excavators working for the family of Ms McKay had discovered a bone at a site where they were told her body was buried.

Although, the Metropolitan Police have confirmed the bone “does not belong to a human”.

The discovery was made about a metre down in the back yard of a betting shop on Bethnal Green Road in Hackney, London.

Grandson, Mark Dyer says he believes Muriel was “mixed up with the remains of a cow in order to confuse any future investigation”.

“That's possibly what happened, because they didn't want anybody to find her, because if they did, they would end up getting life in prison.”

Brothers Arthur and Nizamodeen Hosein were arrested and convicted of Ms McKay's murder, one of the first murder trials with no evidence of the victim's body. They never revealed her fate.

Mr Dyer says the family has spent at least £100,000 looking for where Muriel was buried, saying this is the “first time in British history that a family have had to go and privately dig up a relative”.

Speaking to Greatest Hits Radio, Mr Dyer also says they need to tie up this "last loose end".

“It's so easy to end our story at this one address and then we're hanging our guns up because we've done everything we can.

“We've got no other leads, got no one else…We’ve got this, that's it.”

He hopes finding her body will finally bring the family to closure after decades of unanswered questions.

“It ends the mystery. It stops the stories being told. It ticks so many things, and to have closure about what happened, where she is, where bits of her are”, Mr Dyer said.
