Police confirmed the incident in a joint statement from Hertfordshire Constabulary and the British Transport Police.

Shortly after 9 am this morning (28th May) a man, who was being transported from Stevenage custody to court by a contractor, fled the stationary vehicle on the hard shoulder.

An extensive area search involving multiple resources ensued.

Though formal identification is pending, the family of the escaped man has been informed.

A file has been prepared for the coroner.

Two staff members from the transport contractor were injured during an altercation in the van and were hospitalised.
