St Paul's Church in Bedford is offering the public a rare opportunity to view its historic bells and intricate clock mechanism before refurbishment begins later this month.

Visitors can attend the church on the 2nd and 3rd of November to witness the 12 bells being lowered and then view them closely from the 8th to the 26th of November.

The bells, mostly dating back to 1896/97 and crafted by John Taylor & Co, have not been publicly viewed since World War II.

Weighing up to one and a half tonnes, these bells will be overhauled and rehung in a new metal frame next year.

The church's 1811 clock, featuring a deadbeat escapement mechanism dating back to the late 17th century, is also on display. The clock faces are due for repair and repainting.

Additional displays include decorative boards recording names of people who have rung peals in commemoration of special events, which will be available for viewing until the end of November.

The Revd Anthony Davis, vicar said: "This landmark project will help ensure that the treasured features of St Paul's continue to serve Bedford and its community for generations to come.

Thanks to everyone who has worked tirelessly to bring this ambitious project to life."

The project has reached its £940,000 target, with £25,000 left to raise.
