A carer from Chestnut has been given a suspended sentence after stealing jewellery from two vulnerable people while working in a position of trust.

38-year-old Janay Marsh, of Davison Drive in Cheshunt, took items of sentimental value including a wedding ring, a watch, and a necklace.

Some of the stolen jewellery has since been recovered and returned to the victims, but not all of it has been found.

Marsh admitted to two counts of theft from a property when she appeared at St Albans Magistrates’ Court in April.

At a hearing on Thursday 14 May, she was given a 12-month suspended sentence. She was also ordered to pay £600 in compensation to the victims, who experienced emotional distress and loss of personal belongings. In addition, she must complete 150 hours of unpaid work.

Detective Constable Chris Coates said: “Marsh took advantage of her role to steal from vulnerable people in their own homes, causing significant distress to those affected.

“These were personal and sentimental items, and while it is positive that some have been returned, we recognise the impact this has had on the victims.

“We remain committed to protecting vulnerable people and will always act on reports of this nature to ensure offenders are brought before the courts."
