Hertfordshire Police has warned that drug-related crime, and the violent criminality that can be associated with the supply of drugs, can have a significant impact on local communities.

The force is encouraging residents to report suspected drug activity in their neighbourhood, stressing that information from the public can help officers build evidence and take action.

Signs of cannabis cultivation

Police have highlighted a number of signs that could indicate a property is being used to grow cannabis. These include:

A powerful, distinctive sweet or sickly smell.

Frequent visitors to a property throughout the day and night.

Blacked-out windows or vents that have been sealed or blocked to prevent heat and smells escaping.

Birds gathering on a roof, particularly during cold weather.

Snow melting unusually quickly on a roof during winter.

High levels of condensation on windows.

Noise from ventilation fans.

Large quantities of rubbish, including compost bags.

Signs that an electricity meter has been tampered with or altered.

New or unusual electrical cabling, sometimes extending towards street lighting.

Police are asking anyone who suspects drug crime in their area to report their concerns.
