Buckinghamshire Council elects new Leader and Cabinet at annual meeting
Councillor Steven Broadbent has taken over as Leader of Buckinghamshire Council following this month's local elections and has confirmed his new Cabinet team
A new Leader has been elected for Buckinghamshire Council at its Annual General Meeting held on Wednesday, 21 May. The council also confirmed the appointment of a new Cabinet following local elections earlier this month.
Steven Broadbent, a councillor since the council was formed in 2020, was chosen to lead the authority. He had previously served as Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Transport.
Following his election as Leader, Steven said: “I am deeply honoured to have been elected as Leader of Buckinghamshire Council and offer my thanks to colleagues for placing their faith in me to deliver for the people of this great county.”
“I want to assure the people of Buckinghamshire that I am here to represent every single one of you. I look forward to working with all Members with the shared priority of acting in the best interests of our residents every step of the way.”
He also paid tribute to outgoing Leader Martin Tett, who held the role for 14 years, saying: “I take on this mantle with an excellent foundation on which to build.”
Steven has appointed the following councillors to Cabinet positions:
Peter Strachan, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Planning and Regeneration
Thomas Broom, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Transport
Adekunle Osibogun, Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services
Steve Bowles, Cabinet Member for Communities
Isobel Darby, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing
Peter Brazier, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure
Carl Jackson, Cabinet Member for Environment, Climate Change and Waste
Mark Winn, Cabinet Member for Accessible Housing and Regulatory Services
Robert Carington, Cabinet Member for Resources
Deputy Cabinet Members were also appointed and are listed on the council’s website.
At the same meeting, Sarfaraz Khan Raja was named Chairman of Buckinghamshire Council, and John Chilver was elected as Vice Chairman for the next year. The Chairman is responsible for leading Full Council meetings and representing the council at official events.
In this month’s local elections, 97 councillors were elected to represent 49 wards across Buckinghamshire.
