Police are renewing their appeal for information regarding an incident in Bishop’s Stortford, now being investigated as an attempted rape after further inquiries.

The incident occurred as a woman walked along Dunmow Road between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Monday, 13th April, when she was approached by an unknown man near the golf club.

Reportedly, the man spoke to her before pulling her from the path into the treeline, where he made threats and assaulted her, resulting in injuries to her head, face, and arms.

The woman managed to escape towards Stortford Hall Park and sought assistance from passersby while the suspect walked off in the opposite direction.

The suspect is described as having olive skin, a very thin build, and messy light brown curly hair down to his ears.

He was clean-shaven, wearing a hat, all-black clothing, and carrying a black backpack.

Detective Inspector Maxine Matthews said:

“Understandably this was an extremely frightening ordeal for the victim, who is being safeguarded and supported by specialist officers.

“We know this will also cause a great deal of concern among the local community. There is an increased police presence in the area to provide reassurance and members of the public are encouraged to report any concerns or suspicious activity.

“A fast time CCTV review is being carried out, alongside other enquiries.

“As we continue our investigation, I am re-appealing for anyone with information to please come forward. Were you walking or driving in the area around the time? Did you see anyone matching the description given or witness any suspicious activity?

“Any information you have could be crucial to assisting our enquiries, so please get in touch.

“In addition, if you have any CCTV or dashcam footage of note, this can be uploaded directly to our online portal. Thank you.”

Information can be reported online, using the police web chat, or by calling the non-emergency number 101, quoting Op Catenane.

You may also provide information anonymously by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 or via their online form.
