Bedfordshire Police is advising the public to be vigilant following a robbery which took place in Luton earlier this week.

Officers were called at around 9.40pm on Monday (23 March) to a report of a bag being taken while the victim was loading their car. The incident happened at the junction of Francis Street and Crawley Road.

The victim was pushed to the floor and a bag was snatched from the boot of the vehicle. The bag contained photographic and video equipment, including a pair of Meta glasses and a DJI gimbal, among other items.

The suspect is described as a slim man, around 5ft 10in tall, dressed all in black, including a black hoodie and a face covering. He made off on an e-scooter.

Detective Chief Inspector Tanya Shotbolt from Bedfordshire Police said:

“We will not tolerate criminality of this kind and are actively working to identify and apprehend the suspect and stop them from causing more harm.

Personal robbery causes distress, both to the victims themselves and to the wider community. We are urging anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has doorbell or dashcam footage from around the location at the time, to contact us.”

Anyone with information is asked to report it online at:

or call 101 quoting reference 498 of 23 March.

In an emergency always call 999.

Crime prevention advice

Police are also reminding the public of some simple steps to help reduce the risk of becoming a victim of robbery:

Stay alert to your surroundings.

Criminals often take advantage when people are distracted. Wearing headphones or looking down at your phone can reduce your awareness of what’s happening around you.

Plan your route.

Stick to well-lit paths and busy streets where possible, and avoid shortcuts through dark alleyways or secluded areas.

Trust your instincts. If you feel uneasy or think someone may be following you, change your route immediately and head to a busy, well-populated area or into a shop where you can safely call for help.

Remember, in an emergency, always call 999.
