Elderly targeted in Bedfordshire street thefts

Police urge vigilance after jewellery thefts rise

Police in Bedfordshire have issued a warning to the public following a rise in thefts and robberies across the county using distraction techniques to steal jewellery.

The perpetrators predominantly target elderly individuals, approaching them in the street under the guise of friendliness.

They place costume jewellery around the victim's neck or wrist and subsequently remove genuine jewellery by distracting the victim, often through hugs or offering money.

Although this tactic is common, the victims frequently remain unaware of the theft until after the perpetrators have left.

Since the end of May, 16 incidents, including cases in Luton, Dunstable, and Bedford, have been reported, resulting in the loss of valuable items.

A dedicated operation has been launched by detectives in Bedfordshire to investigate these thefts, with collaboration from neighbouring police forces to connect similar incidents.

In connection with an offence in Bedfordshire, a man and woman, both in their 30s, have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit theft. They have been released on bail with conditions.

Detective Constable Chloe Marshall highlighted the distress these thefts cause:

“We know that thefts like this cause enormous distress both directly to victims and the wider community.

“We will not tolerate this type of criminality and remain committed to doing everything we can to identify those responsible and prevent further offending.

“I would urge anyone with elderly relatives to make them aware and would encourage everyone to take sensible precautions particularly if approached by a stranger.”
