Bedfordshire businesses urged to strengthen fire security
The fire service is warning of a rise in arson threat
Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) is calling on businesses to take immediate steps to protect their premises from the threat of arson, which remains one of the leading causes of commercial fires in the UK.
The service has warned that arson can lead to significant financial losses, major disruption to operations, and serious risk to life.
Many of these incidents are described as opportunistic and preventable, particularly through improved site security, waste management, and robust closing procedures.
Group Commander Mark Garrett highlighted the impact of serious fires on local businesses.
He said: "We’re asking all local businesses to take arson prevention seriously. It’s reported that following a serious fire, 25% of businesses don’t re-open.
"Simple measures, such as better waste storage and double-checking all doors are locked, can be the difference between ‘business as usual’ and a devastating fire.
"Prevention really is the best protection."
BFRS is encouraging all businesses to ensure their fire risk assessments are current and include considerations around arson.
They recommend that business owners review their existing security arrangements, including access to flammable materials and the installation of deterrents such as CCTV and motion-sensitive lighting.
The fire service also emphasises the importance of controlling combustible waste, particularly by using secure, lockable bins kept at a safe distance from buildings.
Proper end-of-day checks, including turning off ignition sources and securing all entry points, are also considered essential.
Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service offers guidance and support on fire safety compliance and risk reduction for businesses of all sizes.
Business owners who are unsure about the effectiveness of their current fire prevention measures are encouraged to contact the service directly.
