Robel Gebremariam jailed after early morning attack
Robel Gebremariam, 25, from Dudley Street, Bedford, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for raping a woman after approaching her in Bedford in July 2024.
The attack occurred in the early hours on Greyfriars when Gebremariam approached the woman, walked alongside her, and offered her alcohol from a shop.
He subsequently booked a taxi, taking her to his residence where he supplied more alcohol before assaulting her.
The victim promptly reported the crime, which led to an investigation by Bedfordshire Police’s Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) team.
Gebremariam was identified through intelligence work and CCTV footage.
He was found guilty after a four-day trial earlier this year and was sentenced at Luton Crown Court to nine years in prison, with an additional one-year extended licence.
Detective Constable Olivia Phillips from RASSO praised the victim’s bravery, stating that her action played a vital role in ensuring Gebremariam's swift apprehension.
“I am glad he will now serve a custodial sentence, and I hope this sends a clear message that this behaviour will not be tolerated,” Phillips said.
