A 41-year-old man died in Bedford after being shot by armed police at a property on Aylesbury Road, prompting an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

The shooting occurred shortly after 9.30am on 12th May, following an overnight standoff involving Bedfordshire Police.

Officers had initially been called to the address at around 10.40pm on 11th May after reports of disorderly behaviour by a man who was allegedly carrying a weapon and had caused damage to a vehicle.

Upon arrival, police negotiators attempted to communicate with the man, who refused to leave the property and threatened officers.

Armed officers were initially stood down, but returned later after the situation escalated.

Shortly after 6am, authorities began evacuating nearby properties when the man poured petrol from a window and gas fumes were detected.

During the incident, footage showed the man presenting what appeared to be a firearm from the window, prompting armed police to return to the scene.

A single shot was fired from a police rifle as well as two baton rounds, according to confirmed ammunition countbacks.

IOPC Director Emily Barry expressed condolences to the man's family and the local community and emphasized the importance of an independent investigation.

“Our investigation is in its early stages, but we are working quickly to obtain and review evidence as we investigate the actions and decision-making of the officers involved,” Barry said.

As part of initial enquiries, investigators are reviewing various police footage including body cam, drone, and vehicle video.

Initial accounts from officers involved have been obtained, with further detailed accounts to be collected over the coming week.

The Coroner has been informed, and a post-mortem examination is scheduled, although the man's identity will not be confirmed before the formal identification process is complete.

Investigators remain on site, conducting a scene examination and making inquiries with neighbours, including reviewing any additional footage.

A non-police issue firearm found inside the property will also undergo analysis.
