Former player Adrian Mariappa announced at Watford's new Head Coach
Last season, Mariappa served as the Under-21 Assistant Coach and later led the development squad
Watford FC has announced the appointment of Adrian Mariappa as first-team coach, taking over the position following the departure of Dan Gosling.
Mariappa, a former Watford defender, was promoted from the Academy after Gosling left the club to explore other career opportunities.
Last season, Mariappa served as the Under-21 Assistant Coach and later led the development squad.
Watford's Head Coach, Alessio Dionisi, expressed his satisfaction with Mariappa's new role.
“I’m really pleased Adrian has agreed to join our staff,” Dionisi said.
“He already has a good relationship with Luca Vigiani from when they worked together under Walter Mazzarri and it has become clear to me the esteem in which he is held by everyone at the club and the fans."
Dionisi highlighted the importance of maintaining a strong link with the Academy.
“The link with the Academy is very important at this club so I am happy we are able to promote from within a coach of great promise and standards who understands this club.”
Mariappa's journey as a coach mirrors his playing career, having started in the Watford FC Academy aged eight.
He made 340 appearances for the club across two periods, first from 2005 to 2012, and again from 2016 to 2020.
His first stint included an impressive run of 114 consecutive league appearances in 2011, halted only by suspension.
Recognised as the 2011/12 Player of the Season, Mariappa occasionally captained the team and contributed to achievements such as the 2006 play-off victory and the 2019 FA Cup final.
His coaching career began during the 2024/25 season, assisting the Under-18s through their FA Youth Cup journey.
Dan Gosling, the departing First-Team Coach, stepped up to the senior squad in February and played an integral role during the 2020/21 promotion campaign.
He had also served as the Under-21 Assistant Coach before leading the Under-18 team.
The club thanked Gosling for his service and expressed best wishes for his future endeavours.
