Planning permission has been granted for the development of the new Fashion Museum Bath, marking a pivotal moment in establishing a major cultural hub in the city centre.

The Grade II listed former Old Post Office on New Bond Street is set to be repurposed into a world-class museum, more than doubling the display space compared to its previous home at the Assembly Rooms.

The new plans promise a bright and welcoming foyer with modern exhibitions, a cafe, and a museum shop, revitalising the historic site.

Public realm improvements will also create new public spaces and green areas, welcoming visitors to the heart of Bath.

Councillor Paul Roper from Bath & North East Somerset Council, said:

“Securing planning permission for Fashion Museum Bath is a landmark moment for our city.

"This project is about much more than a new museum: it is a transformative investment in Bath’s cultural future, bringing new life to historic buildings, creating inspiring spaces for learning and creativity, and ensuring that this world‑class collection can be enjoyed by generations to come.

"It is what this city, local authority and the West of England region deserve.”

With construction expected to start in winter 2027, the museum targets a December 2030 opening.

Funding for the new museum includes £20 million from Bath & North East Somerset Council and support from the West of England Combined Mayoral Authority and The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

After extensive public consultation on the plans, the museum is positioned to play a key role in the regeneration of Milsom Quarter.
