Bath boaters told to move from the Pulteney stretch of the River Avon
Boat owners are being urged to relocate to protect safety
Bath & North East Somerset Council is addressing safety concerns on the Pulteney stretch of the River Avon, urging boat owners to move their vessels by mid-September.
The moorings have been deemed unsafe, not just for those living aboard, but also pose risks to those navigating the river.
In recent years, boats have moored despite being warned of the dangers, particularly during winter months when the channel is essential for flood defence.
An information session for boaters is scheduled for 27th May, where proposals will be outlined and feedback gathered.
Councillor Sarah Warren, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Sustainable B&NES, said, “Boats moored in the Pulteney stretch are in danger from the high risk of flooding, particularly during periods of severe winter weather. This could put lives at risk. We want everyone in B&NES to have a safe place to call home and prevent all our residents from coming to harm.”
The council expresses concern over inappropriate mooring practices like using gangplanks on benches and boats tied to grab lines meant for lifesaving purposes.
June and July will see drop-in sessions aiming to support vessel relocation and connect boaters with local aids, with deadlines looming for legal enforcement if they remain beyond September.
