Work is officially underway to rejuvenate the historic Birnbeck Pier in Weston-super-Mare.

Years of anticipation have led to this moment as restoration efforts on the pier bridge mark the first visible steps in reviving the celebrated design by pier builder Eugenius Birch.

Construction activity is set to intensify in the coming months, with contractor Mackley on site to initiate works on the pier itself.

Office cabins and heavy machinery including a 100-tonne Long Reach excavator and a crane are scheduled to arrive today (13th February) to support the project.

Initial tasks involve creating temporary access to the shoreline, masonry repairs on both sides of the pier, and the refurbishment of its innermost bays.

Scaffolding activity will focus on the trestle legs of the pier.

Due to these developments, the Birnbeck Pier car park - located on Birnbeck Road - will be closed to ensure safety during these operations.

The Birnbeck Regeneration Trust acknowledged the patience of local residents and expressed excitement for the progress.
