The Bath Children’s Literature Festival begins today, bringing a packed programme of events aimed at inspiring young readers and writers. Over 90 activities are scheduled across the city, including storytelling sessions, interactive workshops, and appearances by leading children’s authors.

Among the highlights is Doug Naylor, co-creator of the sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf, who is debuting his first children’s novel, Sin Bin Island. Naylor explained how the book came about: “I got an idea that wouldn’t go away. It was like a stray dog following me everywhere. I even dreamt it. My great niece and nephew were asking every day, ‘Have you finished it yet?’ – I had no choice but to write it.”

The story follows mischievous students at a boarding school who are sent to a mysterious island filled with secrets and adventures. Naylor said his experience in television helped shape his approach: “Writing for kids allows me to create characters with depth, but also to have fun with dialogue and humour. It’s very different from TV, but equally rewarding.”

He also spoke about the importance of festivals like Bath’s in fostering a love of reading: “These events are essential. Hopefully, kids enjoy the books, parents discover them too, and everyone finds inspiration to read more.”

Other notable authors attending include Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Phil Earle, and Anna James, offering a mix of fiction, non-fiction, and graphic novels for young audiences.

Doug Naylor will appear at the Guildhall on Monday, September 29, at 5:00 PM to discuss Sin Bin Island and meet fans. The festival runs until October 5, providing a broad range of activities for children, families, and schools.
