It happened around 7.30pm on Lugar Street when a group of around four or five boys approached him.
Police are going through CCTV footage but need anyone who saw anything to come forward.
Detective Sergeant Graham Cuthill said: "There is no clear motive for this assault and I would like to ask anyone who may have any information about the incident to contact us.
"No matter how insignificant your information is, please let us decide its relevance.
"I'd also appeal to anyone with doorbell or dash cam recording equipment as there could be images which could assist our investigation."
