Rangers appoint Russell Martin as new head coach

Russell Martin has been appointed as the new Rangers head coach.

Martin has signed a three-year deal with the Ibrox side and is the first major move by the club's new American owners, 49ers Enterprises.

He is replacing Philippe Clement who was fired in February.

Former captain Barry Ferguson took interim charge for the remainder of the season once the Belgian was sacked.

After weeks of talks, Martin has been selected despite discussions with other candidates, including Steven Gerrard and Davide Ancelotti.

The 39-year old has top-flight experience in England and is known for his possession-based style of football.

He led Southampton to promotion to the Premier League in his first season in charge at St Mary's but was unable to replicate that form in the top flight and was sacked in December with just one win from their 16 league matches.

He has also managed MK Dons and Swansea south of the border.

Martin had a spell on loan at Ibrox in 2018 as a player, making 17 appearances for the club.

Despite being born in England, the former defender qualified to play for Scotland through his Scottish father and earned 29 caps.

He will take over at Rangers immediately, with the club returning for pre-season on June 23.

The Govan side will enter the second round of Champions League qualifiers on July 22, before the Premiership league campaign begins on August 2.
