New Julie Andrews 'definitive documentary' to air in 2027

A new Julie Andrews documentary has been announced for Disney+, due to air in 2027. The documentary, which has yet to be officially named has been called the 'definitive documentary' by the streaming service.

Announcing the news in a joint post with the legendary actress, Disney+ shared a photo of Julie, writing: 'Courage, resilience, grace. The definitive documentary on the legendary Julie Andrews is coming to Disney+ in 2027.'

Since posting the news fans from around the world have been leaving comments, with many saying they mistook the post for a death announcement, but they were very glad it was very different news. One wrote: 'Don’t scare me like this ever again', another said: 'DISNEY OMG I just landed and saw this. MY HEART I thought something happened to our queen'. (sic)

Thankfully the actress is absolutely fine, and will be the subject of this new documentary, which Disney describes as: 'Featuring rare, never-before-seen archival footage and candid new interviews, the film pulls back the curtain on the woman behind the legends of Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, and The Princess Diaries, exploring a life where immense talent opened the door, but courage and determination defined the legacy.'

Director/producer R.J. Cutler said of the announcement: “Julie Andrews is not simply a beloved performer. She is a cultural touchstone, a figure woven into the fabric of how generations of people understand joy, resilience, and grace. Most people don’t know the extraordinary challenges she’s had to overcome throughout her life, all of which we delve into in this film.

"To sit with Julie, to be allowed into her inner world, to watch her reflect on a life that has shaped so many other lives, was an experience I will forever cherish. She gave us her full self, without armour, without pretense. And what we found was someone even more extraordinary than the icon. I am humbled by her talent, in awe of her strength and honoured by her trust.”

In recent years Julie, who is now 90-years-old, hasn't made many public appearances, but earlier this year, the Sound of Music actress made a rare appearance via video at the Parkinson's Disease Conference. Dame Julie told the attendees: "May we all become a beacon of light to stop it in its tracks. Count me in as a red thread. Thank you."

Despite rarely making public appearances, the actress voices the part of Lady Whistledown in the Netflix series Bridgerton - receiving an Emmy Award for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance in 2025.
