Commemorations take place across the UK to mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11
2977 people, including 67 from the UK, died in the attacks on the 11th of September 2001
Commemorations are taking place across the country today to mark the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attack.
2,977 people were killed when 4 commercial airplanes were hijacked. Two of the planes crashed into the Twin Towers in New York City, one into the Pentagon and a fourth plane crashed after being brought down by passengers on board.
67 of the people killed were from the United Kingdom.
A memorial service will take place today at the London Olympic Park, with family members of those killed and representatives of the emergency services set to make speeches.
A separate memorial concert will take place at Southwark Cathedral, where music representing 'American and British music' will 'reflect on loss, memory and the human cost of violence.
Memories of 9/11
One man who remembers the day is current co-CEO of BGC Group Sean Windeatt. He was working at the financial company's London headquarters and was on the phone to a colleague in the World Trade Centre when the first plane hit.
" I was working in the finance department on the 4th floor of our old building over by Tower Bridge and I was on the phone to my colleague in New York making my normal morning call when the line went dead.
"For me, that is that that moment will live with me forever".
He said his first thoughts when the world learned about the attack was about his colleagues and friends.
"You think about, just how traumatic and what an unthinkable experience it must be for your friends and colleagues.
"The gentleman that hired me, the CFO that hired me did not survive.
"The person I was talking to on the phone every morning did not survive".
