An investigation's been launched after three on duty police officers had an unknown liquid thrown on them as they responded to a report of an affray in Leicester city centre in the early hours of Sunday morning (24 August).

Police believe that the substance may have also hit some members of the public, who were in the area of King Street when it was thrown, at around 4.50am.

While it is unknown what the liquid is at this time, medical professionals do not believe there will be any lasting effects on the affected officers.

A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of administering a noxious substance and was questioned by detectives.

He's since been released on bail.

Leicestershire police would like to hear from those who have been affected and those who may have seen what happened.

DI Jenny Tattersall said: “The officers were taken to hospital after the liquid significantly irritated their skin and eyes.

"They have been monitored over several hours and discharged this morning.

“While we don’t know what the substance is at this stage and tests will be carried out, medical professionals have indicated that there will be no lasting damage.

“We know that there were other people in the area at the time the liquid was thrown and I’d like anyone who may had been contaminated with it to contact us.

"It may be on items of clothing, and that will be further evidence.

“Equally, if you were in the area and saw what happened in the incident, or in the moments before or after, I’m interested in hearing from you.

"We know from CCTV enquiries that there were a lot of people in the area at the time.”
