South Wales Police are currently investigating the sudden death of a 13-year-old boy in Neath.

The incident occurred on the grounds of the Melin Primary School, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 29th January.

Next of kin have been informed and his family are being supported.

HM Coroner has been notified and the death is not being treated as suspicious at this time.

The school released the following statement on Wednesday: "Dear parents / guardians,

"We want to inform you that Melin Primary School (infant and junior sites) will reopen tomorrow (Thursday 30 January) following a tragic incident that occurred on the school grounds in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday 29th January).

"We understand that recent events have been distressing, and we want to assure you that the wellbeing of our students, staff and wider school community remains our top priority.

"Support services will be available at the school to assist anyone in need. If your child requires additional support, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

"Thank you for your continued support".

A Neath Port Talbot Council spokesperson said: “We are extremely saddened to hear this tragic news and our thoughts go out to the family.

"South Wales Police officers are currently investigating and the council will offer any possible assistance.

"Melin Primary School (infant and junior sites) was closed on Wednesday, January 29th.

"Support will be offered to anyone affected. The school will re-open today (Thursday, January 30th)".

No further details about the cause of death have been confirmed at this time.
