A Co Armagh school was closed today (Wednesday) after what it said was "extreme unforeseen circumstances."

The closure was announced on Lurgan Junior High's Facebook page.

The school apologised for "any inconvenience."

It is understood there was a burglary followed by a fire in the school in the early hours of the morning.

In response to an inquiry about the incident from Downtown Radio & Cool FM, a PSNI statement said they were investigating a burglary and "arson"..

A spokesperson said: "Police are investigating a report of burglary and arson at premises in the Toberhewny Lane Lower area of Lurgan in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday 14th May.

"We received a report of burglary at the school just after midnight and when officers arrived, a fire was observed within the school grounds. Police contacted the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service, who subsequently attended the scene.

“Two males – a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old – have been arrested on suspicion of burglary and arson and remain in custody at this time.

“Enquiries are ongoing and at this stage, the fire is being treated as deliberate.

“Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 4 of 14/05/25.

“Alternatively, information can be provided to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.”

In a statement on its Facebook page, the school said: "Due to extreme unforeseen circumstances, the school will be closed today, Wednesday 14th May to pupils.

"We wholeheartedly apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding during this time.

"Further updates will be provided in due course.
