County Down: Man spotted with a gun on church grounds
A suspect has been arrested after the incident in Bangor
Armed Response officers were called to an incident in Bangor on Thursday night, following reports of a man with a gun in the Newtownards Road area.
It is reported members of a church group saw it in his pocket, as they approached him for allegedly damaging a fixture on the church grounds with an angle grinder.
A suspect is being questioned.
Superintendent McDowell said: "We received a report just before 9.20pm on Thursday, 18th September, that a man had been seen in the grounds of a church with an angle grinder, causing damage to a fixture.
"When he was approached by members of a church group, they saw what they believed to be a firearm in his pocket and contacted police.
"Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene alongside Armed Response colleagues. The suspect, a man aged 36, was located at a nearby address.
"He was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm in suspicious circumstances and criminal damage, and remains in custody at this time.
"We would appeal to anyone who may have noticed suspicious activity in the area to contact us on 101, quoting reference 1452 of 18/09/25."
