DIY SOS to be 'rested' after 27 years on screens
Nick Knowles has reacted to the news
It's been a staple on our TV screens since 1999, but it sounds like popular home makeover show DIY SOS won't be returning in 2027, as the BBC have decided to put the show on ice.
Despite recent reports suggesting the show, which is hosted by Nick Knowles, had been axed for good, the BBC has now confirmed it will be 'rested' for 2027, with a new spin-off called DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life airing in its place.
A BBC spokesperson said: "In light of the BBC's savings challenges, we have taken the decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027 and commission a new spin-off show instead, from producers South Shore.
"DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life (w/t) will revisit successes from the show's past, and expand the brand on the BBC in a more cost-effective way next year."
Presenter Nick has now responded to the news online, writing on Instagram: 'You may have already seen the news that DIY SOS is being put on ‘pause’. Of course, I’m disappointed not to be filming the show next year or again in the same format we know and love. But I do understand there’s no endless pot of money at the BBC and sometimes they have to make difficult decisions. Thank you for all the messages and comments over the weekend. It’s so clear you share my sentiment and deep love for this show.
'For 26 years it’s been an honour and a privilege to be part of DIY SOS and I’ve loved nothing more than making it.
'What I always come back to is that it’s the people who are the beating heart of SOS. Over the years we’ve had thousands of tradespeople, suppliers and volunteers, all people trying to make their own living, who have shown up time and time again for the families who need it most. Kind, hardworking people and real working-class heroes coming together to build a better community. It really is the best of Britain and we need to see more of it on telly.
'I’ve always put my head above the parapet for tradespeople and this industry I love and I’ll keep doing that. But for now, I want to say thank you to every family for sharing their story with us over the last 26 years.
'To the volunteers, production team, purple shirts, commissioners and everyone watching at home, we couldn’t have done this without you. And to everyone who hasn’t seen the series yet, give it a watch. I promise your heart will be warmed'. (sic)
First hitting our screens back in 1999 as DIY SOS, the show ran for 19 series until 2010, before it was rebranded to DIY SOS: The Big Build.
With the same team at the helm, DIY SOS: The Big Build aired until 2022, before production company South Shore won the bid to produce the series, changing it back to DIY SOS in 2024.
Unsurprisingly, fans of the show aren't happy with the news, with one viewer saying: 'Without doubt the worst decision the bbc has made. Makes you wonder what will happen to death in paradise franchise and silence witness?'.
Another asked: 'Apart from the actual filming, how is it saving money? All the work and supplies are donated. I know. I donated on behalf of a company i used to work for. Saving Mr Knowle's fee?'
A third wrote: 'One of the best programs on tv is what they call been rested to save money. Yet one of the worst on tv that the BBC have "Bargain Hunt" is staying on. Someone is having a laugh in the BBC headquarters'. (sic)
Despite the news, applications for 'future series' of DIY SOS are still open online, with the website stating: 'As of the start of 2026 we are still accepting applications for potential future series. Once another series is confirmed the casting team will start looking through applications and will be in touch if they want more information.
'This is the only way to apply - please do not contact South Shore directly - and rest assured every application will be considered'.
Series 35 of DIY SOS is currently airing every Tuesday night on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
