Disney confirm release date for sequel of Lilo & Stitch live-action remake

It'll be almost exactly three years after the first!

Disney fans will be over the moon to learn that the sequel to the live-action remake of Lilo and Stitch has now got an official release date! After the second film was confirmed back in June 2025, Disney bosses have taken to social media to announce just exactly when it'll be hitting the big screen.

When will the Lilo and Stitch live-action remake sequel be released?

Taking to social media, Disney bosses wrote: 'Our ‘ohana is back 💙,' alongside the date of 26th May 2028.

Fans were over the moon to hear the news, with many taking to the comments to share their happiness and leaving comments about how excited they are. Lilo actress Maia Kealoha added: 'Cheehooo!!!'

Credited with boosting studio bosses' confidence in the remakes thanks to its success, the original Lilo and Stitch remake was released on 21st May 2025 - meaning its follow-up will arrive almost exactly three years later.

The original film made over $1 billion around the world, giving Disney renewed faith in their live-action remake plans - leading them to launch into the Tangled remake with refreshed enthusiasm.

What will the sequel be about?

Bosses haven't confirmed anything about the plot of the upcoming sequel, but there's plenty of material to go off, considering that the original animated film saw a sequel Stitch! The Movie, a TV show called Lilo & Stitch: The Series, a TV film entitled Leroy & Stitch and another sequel, Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch.

It's likely that we could see more of Dr Jumba Jookiba's experiments in the upcoming film!

Is it on Disney+?

Yes, the original movie landed on streaming platform Disney+ on 3rd September 2025.

Will there be a Lilo and Stitch 2?

Yes! The House of Mouse excited fans by sharing a short video online in June 2025, revealing Lilo and Stitch 2 is in development!

The clip shows a typically cheeky Stitch using the pink drop-top he nabbed from Lilo's school friend to drift around the Walt Disney Studios' car park, writing 'Lilo and Stitch 2' with his skid marks. The caption reads: 'should’ve known he couldn’t keep a secret. a 626 day surprise: #LiloAndStitch 2 is now in development!' (sic)

Who is in the cast of the Lilo and Stitch remake?

Courtney B. Vance was cast as Cobra Bubbles, the guarded social worker and former CIA agent who is assigned to look out for Lilo's wellbeing, voiced by Pulp Fiction's Ving Rhames in the 2002 original. Courtney is best known for his roles in The Hunt For Red October and Space Cowboys.

Also cast is Kahiau Machado as David Kawena, love interest of Lilo's older sister Nani who is also her legal guardian. David has a great relationship with Lilo and is always trying to date Nani, who feels she can't take her attentions away from Lilo.

Sydney Elizabeth Agudong was cast as Nani. She fights throughout the film to keep looking after her at home instead of being taken by social services.

Newcomer Maia Kealoha takes on the role of Lilo, and Hollywood star Zach Galifianakis also signed on to star as Dr. Jumba Jookiba, the mad scientist and creator of Stitch. Billy Magnussen was cast as Agent Pleakley.

The original film's voice actor for Stitch, Chris Sanders, also returned to the role - he was also the film's writer and director.

Tia Carrere - who voiced Nani in the original film - returned as social worker Mrs. Kekoa, and Jason Scott Lee - who voiced David in the original film - returned as the manager of the luau that David and Nani work at.

Hannah Waddingham also played the Grand Councilwoman.

When did it come out?

Disney's live action remake of Lilo & Stitch came out on 21st May 2025.

Where was the first live-action movie filmed?

Hawaii - where else! Filming took place throughout 2023 and 2024, concluding in March 2024.

Who directed it?

The Hollywood Reporter said in 2020 that Crazy Rich Asians' director Jon M. Chu would take the reins for the Lilo & Stitch reboot, with Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback producing after their stellar work on the Aladdin remake.

However, Dean Fleischer Camp was later confirmed to take on the direction after his huge success with Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, which was a mix between live-action and stop-motion animation, and was nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
