Actor and comedian Russell Brand has been described as a “ruthless, calculated and manipulative sexual predator" who raped and groped women to satisfy his sexual appetite in court.
The 51-year-old is accused of attacking six women between 1999 and 2009.
Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC outlined the claims at Southwark Crown Court, portraying Brand as someone who used humour and charm to facilitate his alleged offenses.
Brand, who denies all the charges, is accused of rape and sexual assault in various locations including a hotel room and a bar’s toilet cubicle.
According to the prosecution, Brand's offensive actions coincided with his emergence from stand-up comedy to television presenting and Hollywood stardom.
During the opening statement, jurors heard that Brand allegedly dismissed one accuser's protest during an attack, telling her, “don’t be a spoilsport.”
The British comedian allegedly assaulted women at the 1999 Labour Party conference, a radio station and a Soho bar.
Brand, now living in Florida, attended court accompanied by his wife Laura Gallacher and expressed concern yet hope for a positive outcome for everyone involved.
The trial, which is set to continue in the coming days, has brought renewed attention to Brand's past, when he was a familiar figure in British media and entertainment.
The ongoing proceedings delve into incidents throughout his career, as highlighted by prosecutor Karmy-Jones who claimed Brand’s pursuit was fueled by an "insatiable desire."
Jurors will continue to hear evidence as the trial progresses at Southwark Crown Court.
Brand has pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.
