A serious house fire in South Wales has resulted in one person losing their life, police have confirmed.

Emergency services were called to a property in Glenboi, near Mountain Ash, just before 2:15am on 31st December, with firefighters arriving at a “well-developed fire.”

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it received the call at 01:39 and attended the incident with five water ladders and other specialist resources, including Urban Search and Rescue and Fire Investigation teams.

The fire caused significant damage to the property, with parts of the structure collapsing.

South Wales Police officers assisted by closing nearby roads and evacuating residents from neighbouring houses for their safety.

In a statement, a spokesperson for South Wales Police said:

"A joint investigation is currently underway between South Wales Police and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, with assistance from Rhondda Cynon Taff Council.

"A secure scene has been set up, and Crime Scene and Fire Investigators will conduct their examinations once the structure is deemed safe.

"Our thoughts are with the family and community during this difficult time."

The road in Glenboi will stay closed while investigations continue.
