Yellow weather warning issued for Northern Ireland this week

Showers and thunderstorms are on the way this week, as forecasters warn it may cause disruption to transport and outdoor events.

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued across Northern Ireland, on Tuesday (4th Aug) from 12noon to 9pm.

The Met Office has forecast showers to develop Tuesday morning, becoming heavy and locally thundery into the afternoon.

"Whilst some areas will miss these, where they do develop they will be slow-moving, bringing 20-30 mm of rain in an hour or two. Strong and gusty winds and hail will also be possible with the heaviest showers."

What to expect?

⚠️ Some flooding of a few homes and businesses likely, leading to some damage to buildings or structures

⚠️ There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus

⚠️ Delays to train services are possible

⚠️ Possibly some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes

⚠️ Some short term loss of power and other services is likely

Today: Cloudy with outbreaks of rain spreading north in the morning, but becoming drier for a time in the afternoon with some bright spells possible. Further rain spreading north late in the afternoon heavy at times. Very warm and humid. Maximum temperature 23 °C.

Tonight: It will be cloudy with outbreaks of rain spreading north, turning heavy at times and perhaps quite persistent in the southeast with some drier spells developing in the west overnight. Minimum temperature 15 °C.

Tuesday: Cloudy in the morning with some rain or drizzle. Some showers breaking out in the afternoon, occasionally heavy and perhaps thundery, but also some bright spells breaking through at times. Maximum temperature 22 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday: Breezy and cloudy with showers or longer spells of rain on Wednesday. Drier and brighter with just a few showers on Thursday. Showery rain from the west on Friday.
