A teenage boy, who is understood to be from County Tyrone, is in a critical condition after getting into difficulty while swimming in a lake.

It happened at Emy Lough in County Monaghan on Bank Holiday Monday.

A statement from an An Garda Síochána said, “Gardaí and emergency services responded to a report of a male youth having gotten into difficulty in the water at Emy Lough, Emyvale, Co Monaghan, at around 5:00pm on 25th May 2026.”

“Medical assistance was provided at the scene and he was airlifted to the Mater Misercordiae University Hospital, Dublin, where his condition is described as critical”

There've been a number of water tragedies over the bank holiday period, with six young people losing their lives in England, as well as a teenage girl in the Republic of Ireland.
