A teenager has been charged after two police officers were assaulted in Londonderry.

Police said the officers were attending a report of a fight involving two men in the Sackville Street area at around 9.30pm on Friday when they sustained hand and arm injuries.

A police spokesperson said: “One of the men was reported to have behaved in an aggressive manner towards police, during which a bottle which he was holding smashed.

“Two officers sustained hand and arm injuries as a result.”

Later on Saturday, police said a 19-year-old man has been charged with two counts of assault on police, two counts of resisting police and wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

They said he is further charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent to resist apprehension and possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence, and is due to appear before Londonderry Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

“As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service,” a police spokesperson added.
