Restrictions against swimming at Benone Beach lifted
Temporary advice against bathing was issued last week following the detection of blue-green algae.
Restrictions against swimming at one of Northern Ireland's most popular beaches have been lifted.
Temporary advice against bathing at Benone Beach in County Londonderry was issued on Friday the 22nd of August following the detection of blue-green algae.
A new statement from DAERA said, “Temporary advice against bathing at Benone Beach has been removed after monitoring indicated that blue-green algae was no longer a risk.”
“The bathing water operator, Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, has been informed and temporary advice against bathing signage has now been removed.”
The public is advised to check the NI Bathing Water Quality Dashboard and on-site signage for the latest updates.
So far this year, Northern Ireland’s environmental agencies have logged more than 100 alerts for blue-green algae at lake and beach sites, with the majority of sightings in Lough Neagh and the Lower Bann, as well as Lough Erne.
