A man is due in court later charged in connection with damage caused to one of Belfast's most iconic landmarks.

The left eye of the "Big Fish" sculpture was smashed over the weekend.

Also known as "The Salmon of Knowledge," the sculpture is made from a mosaic of ceramic tiles and sits next to the River Lagan.

A PSNI statement said, “Police in Belfast, investigating criminal damage to a sculpture in the city centre in the early hours of this morning, Sunday, 20th September, have charged a man to court.”

“The 44-year-old has been charged with criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.”

“He is due to appear at Belfast Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 21st September.”

“As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.”
