Man charged after attempted stabbing of police officer

A 53-year-old man has been charged following what the PSNI say was an attempt to seriously assault an officer.

The incident happened at a hospital in Antrim on Friday night.

It is understood a man attempted to stab the police officer with a long, sharp item, and the officer narrowly escaped serious injury.

The man is charged with attempted grievous bodily harm with intent, assault on police and possession of an offensive weapon with attempt.

He is due to appear before Coleraine Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

In a statement, the PSNI said: “As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.”
