Large fire at car showroom in Garvagh believed to be deliberate

More than 50 firefighters were involved in tackling the blaze

A large fire at a car showroom in County Londonderry is believed to have been started deliberately, according to the Fire Service.

It happened overnight on the Carhill Road in Garvagh.

More than 50 firefighters were involved in tackling the blaze at its height.

A statement from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said, “ NIFRS received a call to reports of a building fire on the Carhill Road, Garvagh at 4.30am on Wednesday 13th May.”

“On arrival crews were met with a developed fire involving a car showroom, vehicles and café premises. Crews utilised firefighting jets and an aerial ladder jet to resolve the incident.”

“At the height of the incident 55 firefighters were involved. A total of 6 appliances attended from Maghera, Kilrea, Dungiven, Ballymoney and Coleraine stations, supported by an aerial ladder appliance from Northland Station, a Command Support Unit from Strabane Station and a water tanker from Dungiven Station.”

“The incident was resolved by 7.47am and the cause is believed to be deliberate.”
