The funeral of County Down Olympic athlete Ciara Mageean will take place in her hometown of Portaferry tomorrow.

The middle-distance runner won European gold in 2024 and competed for Ireland at two Olympic Games.

She was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer last year and passed away yesterday morning at the age of 34, just weeks after getting married.

A funeral notice online confirmed the funeral will take place at St Patrick’s Church, Ballyphilip Road, Portaferry tomorrow afternoon. The service will be followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Olympic legend Lady Mary Peters is among the many well-known figures who’ve paid tribute to Ciara, describing her as a “great athlete” and “inspiration to so many young women”.
